The state culinary association still maintained an archive.
Daniel contacted them the next morning.
He expected nothing.
Instead, an archivist located the original 2002 entry packet.
A scanned copy arrived that afternoon.
Daniel opened it with Ethan beside him.
Contestant:
MARCUS HALE.
Recipe:
MIDNIGHT CHOCOLATE SQUARES.
Parent signature:
HELEN HALE.
Then Daniel saw handwritten notes at the bottom.
Almost too faint to read.
Daniel Hale — collaborating sibling, age 15.
Below that:
Not eligible as co-entrant due age/category rules. Credit requested.
Daniel stared at it.
“Age category.”
The competition division accepted contestants sixteen through eighteen.
Daniel had been fifteen.
He could not officially enter.
Helen had apparently registered Marcus because he was eligible.
But she still wrote Daniel’s name on the form.
The official database simply excluded the note when producing contestant lists.
Ethan looked at Daniel.
“So Grandma didn’t erase you either.”
Daniel sat back.
The central story he had carried for twenty-four years was falling apart.
Marcus hadn’t secretly taken sole credit.
Helen hadn’t chosen one son over the other.
The contest rules allowed only Marcus to compete.
Then a newspaper turned a complicated collaboration into one simple headline.
Marcus Hale.
Original recipe.
Winner.
Daniel looked toward Ethan.
“Why didn’t Marcus show me this back then?”
Ethan shrugged.
“Maybe he didn’t have it.”
That was true.
The raw footage had only been digitized six months earlier during the competition’s fiftieth anniversary project.
Marcus found it by accident.
Daniel had never known it existed.
Then another email arrived.
From Marcus.
Only one sentence:
If Daniel watched it, tell him I never wanted the trophy without him.
