Liam Was Left Crying Over a Chocolate Mess — Then Daniel Found His Older Son Holding the Evidence on the Couch
Chapter 2 — The Uncle Liam Had Never Heard About
Daniel sat down slowly.
For years, his sons had believed he was an only child.
He wasn’t.
Marcus Hale was two years older.
Growing up, the brothers had been inseparable.
They shared a bedroom.
Played on the same baseball team.
Worked weekends in their mother Helen’s small bakery.
Then one competition destroyed everything.
Ethan looked frightened.
“Are you mad?”
Daniel stared at the recipe card.
“I’m trying to understand why you’ve been talking to someone I haven’t spoken to in twenty-four years.”
Liam quietly climbed onto the couch beside Ethan.
Daniel noticed.
The little boy who had just been falsely blamed was still sitting next to the brother who blamed him.
That somehow made Daniel even sadder.
“Start at the beginning.”
Ethan swallowed.
His school had assigned a family-history project.
Students were supposed to interview an older relative about something their family once made, built, or created together.
Ethan asked Daniel about Grandma Helen’s bakery.
Daniel changed the subject.
He asked again.
Daniel said the bakery had closed years ago and there was nothing interesting to tell.
So Ethan searched online.
He found an old newspaper clipping.
LOCAL TEEN WINS STATE JUNIOR BAKING CHAMPIONSHIP.
The photograph showed seventeen-year-old Marcus Hale holding a trophy.
Beside him stood a younger Daniel.
But Daniel had been cropped halfway out of the image.
“I searched Marcus Hale,” Ethan said.
He found a pastry instructor in Vermont with the same name.
Ethan emailed him.
He expected nothing.
Marcus responded the next morning.
Is your father Daniel Hale?
Ethan answered yes.
Then Marcus wrote:
Then I’m your uncle.
Daniel closed his eyes.
“What else did he tell you?”
Ethan shook his head.
“Not much.”
Then he admitted:
“He said if I wanted the real story about the chocolate squares, I should ask you why you never watched the whole competition video.”
Daniel’s eyes opened.
“What video?”
Ethan stared at him.
“He said that’s exactly what you’d say.”
