Liam Was Left Crying Over a Chocolate Mess — Then Daniel Found His Older Son Holding the Evidence on the Couch

Chapter 8 — The Box Above the Refrigerator

Daniel still had several boxes of Helen’s belongings.

Most were stored in the basement.

Ethan and Liam helped him search.

Old photographs.

Bakery menus.

Holiday decorations.

Recipe books.

Nothing.

Then Liam asked:

“Where did Grandma keep recipes?”

Daniel pointed toward the kitchen.

“Usually in a metal box.”

He stopped.

After Helen’s bakery closed, Daniel had taken her old recipe tin.

He rarely opened it.

It sat above the refrigerator.

Daniel brought it down.

Inside were hundreds of index cards.

Apple pie.

Cinnamon bread.

Lemon cookies.

Then Midnight Chocolate Squares.

Daniel lifted the recipe.

Underneath was a folded kitchen towel.

Something hard was wrapped inside.

He opened it.

Half of a small wooden trophy base fell into his hands.

Daniel stared.

A brass plate remained attached.

Only half the inscription survived:

STATE JUNIOR BAK…

Alongside it was a note from Helen.

Danny, Marcus asked me to give you this when you were ready. Every time I tried, you told me never to mention him again. Eventually I became afraid the object mattered more than the brothers. I should have tried harder.

Daniel’s eyes filled.

The note continued:

The recipe was always both of yours.

So was the joy of making it.

Please don’t let one badly told story take that away forever.

Daniel sat on the kitchen floor.

For twenty-four years, half a trophy had been less than ten feet from where he ate breakfast every morning.

Not hidden by Marcus.

Not stolen.

Simply waiting above a refrigerator because nobody in the family knew how to have the conversation anymore.
