Chapter 8 — Samuel Wasn’t the Reason Rose Stayed Away
Lucas had one final misunderstanding to correct.
“I always thought my father kept Mom away from her family.”
Evelyn looked surprised.
“Samuel?”
Lucas nodded.
Anna had told him that his father hated talking about the Parkers.
Samuel died when Lucas was fourteen.
For years, Lucas assumed Samuel had encouraged the estrangement.
Then he found one of Samuel’s letters inside the box.
It said the opposite.
Anna, call Evelyn. If she doesn’t answer, call again. Don’t let your father’s pride become yours.
Evelyn began crying again.
Another letter read:
I can live without Walter believing me. I don’t want you living without your sister.
Lucas sat silently.
His mother hadn’t remained away because Samuel demanded it.
She stayed away because every failed attempt made returning harder.
Then Samuel became ill.
Lucas was young.
Money was tight.
Life moved forward.
Eventually the Parker family became something Anna described only as:
“People I knew before you were born.”
Evelyn looked at Lucas.
“She should have told you.”
Lucas answered softly:
“Maybe.”
Then he looked around Evelyn’s living room.
Photographs of children.
Grandchildren.
Birthday celebrations.
“But looking at this, I understand why she might have been scared.”
Evelyn frowned.
“Of what?”
“Coming back and discovering everyone had been fine without her.”
That sentence broke Evelyn more than any document had.
Because it was true.
The Parkers had continued celebrating Christmas.
Birthdays.
Weddings.
New babies.
