Chapter 9 — Evelyn Introduces Lucas to the Family
Evelyn invited Lucas back the following Sunday.
This time he didn’t wear a waiter uniform.
He arrived as family.
Caroline opened the door.
“Come in.”
Lucas smiled nervously.
“This is strange.”
“For all of us.”
Inside were cousins Lucas had never known existed.
Some had questions.
Others simply hugged him.
Evelyn brought out old albums.
This time, she showed the photographs that Walter had once ordered removed.
Rose at fourteen.
Rose holding a guitar.
Rose laughing beside Evelyn.
Rose and Samuel outside the Parker Theater.
Lucas stared at one photograph.
“I’ve never seen Mom this young.”
Evelyn smiled.
“She hated that haircut.”
Lucas laughed.
“She still did. She complained about it when I found an old school picture.”
For the first time, Evelyn heard a story about Rose that belonged to the years she missed.
Then another.
And another.
Lucas told them Anna loved mystery novels.
Burned toast constantly.
Sang loudly while cleaning.
Refused to throw away birthday cards.
Called everyone “kiddo,” including adults older than her.
Evelyn laughed through tears.
“She did that when she was seventeen.”
At dinner, Lucas sat beside Evelyn.
The bracelet remained around his wrist.
Michael looked at it.
“Funny that this is what found you.”
Lucas smiled.
“I was just covering someone’s shift.”
That made everyone stop.
Lucas wasn’t even supposed to serve Evelyn’s table that night.
Another waiter called in sick.
