Chapter 3 — Why Evelyn Kept the Photograph
Lucas could barely process it.
His mother rarely discussed her childhood.
She said both parents were dead.
She had no siblings.
No cousins.
No extended family.
Lucas believed her.
“Why would she lie to me?”
Evelyn looked down.
“Maybe because we taught her that family could disappear the moment you disappointed them.”
That answer silenced the table.
Evelyn picked up the photograph.
It had been taken in 1967.
Evelyn was twenty-four.
Rose was seventeen.
The bracelet around Rose’s wrist had belonged to their mother, Margaret Parker.
Margaret died when Rose was fourteen.
Before her death, she gave the bracelet to Evelyn.
But Evelyn eventually gave it to Rose.
“Why?” Caroline asked.
Evelyn smiled sadly.
“Because Rose thought Mom loved me more.”
After Margaret died, Rose became angry at everyone.
Especially Evelyn.
One evening, Evelyn gave her the bracelet and said:
“Mom didn’t leave you less love. She just ran out of time to show it.”
Rose never took the bracelet off.
Even when she left the family.
Lucas touched it.
“Mom gave it to me before she died.”
He remembered the conversation clearly.
Anna had been weak.
She removed the bracelet.
Fastened it around Lucas’s wrist.
Then said:
“Keep this. Someday it might tell you something I couldn’t.”
Lucas always assumed she meant sentimental family history.
Now the sentence felt completely different.
Evelyn leaned toward him.
“Did she leave anything else?”
Lucas thought.
“A box.”
“What kind?”
“Old photographs and papers.”
He had never examined most of it.
Then Lucas remembered one item.
“There’s a cassette tape.”
Evelyn’s face changed.
“With handwriting on it?”
Lucas nodded.
“It says PARKER THEATER.”
Evelyn went completely still.
