Evelyn contacted the historical society that held old city fire records.
The Parker Theater fire had happened too long ago for a new investigation to be simple.
But the original reports survived.
The fire itself had been ruled accidental.
A defective electrical junction behind the stage caused it.
Samuel had never been suspected of starting the fire.
The family had blurred two separate events together over the years.
The fire.
And the missing instruments.
The instruments had disappeared sometime before firefighters arrived.
Walter assumed Samuel stole them because Samuel needed money.
Raymond encouraged that belief.
Then Rose defended Samuel.
And the family rupture became permanent.
“Why would Raymond take them?” Lucas asked.
The answer appeared in old theater board records.
The Parker Theater was struggling financially.
Raymond had secretly borrowed against several pieces of expensive equipment.
He had also promised the same instruments as collateral for a private loan.
The records were messy.
But one surviving letter from a lender referred to:

Caroline stared at it.
“He moved the instruments because he didn’t want them destroyed.”
Michael shook his head.
“Or because he didn’t want anyone discovering they were already tied to his debts.”
There was no evidence Raymond knew a fire would happen.
The timing appeared coincidental.
But afterward, the confusion gave him cover.
Rather than admit he had secretly moved property, Raymond let suspicion fall on Samuel.
And Walter believed his brother.
Not his daughter.
Evelyn looked devastated.
“Rose spent the rest of her life carrying that.”

“Maybe that’s why she kept the tape.”
