The next afternoon, Lucas brought the box to Evelyn’s house.
Caroline and Michael joined them.
The cardboard box smelled faintly of dust and old paper.
Inside were photographs of Anna throughout her life.
Anna holding baby Lucas.
Anna beside Samuel.
Anna working in a bookstore.
Anna celebrating birthdays.
Evelyn touched each photograph carefully.
“I missed all of this.”
Lucas said nothing.
Then he found the cassette.
Faded label:
PARKER THEATER — AUG. 17.
Evelyn recognized the date.
“The night before the fire.”
Lucas had an old cassette player.
He pressed play.
At first, only music.
Samuel’s band rehearsing.
A piano.
Drums.
Someone laughing.
Then the rehearsal stopped.
Voices continued in the background.
One belonged to Rose.
Another to Samuel.
Then a third voice appeared.
Evelyn leaned closer.
“That’s Uncle Raymond.”
Raymond Parker had been Walter’s younger brother.
He managed the family theater.
On the recording, Raymond sounded angry.
“The instruments are being moved tonight. Nobody needs to know until after the insurance inspector comes.”
Samuel answered:
“You’re removing them before the inspection?”
Raymond said:
“Mind your own business.”
Then Rose’s voice:
“My father thinks they’re staying here.”
Raymond responded:
“Your father doesn’t know everything happening in his own building.”
The recording ended minutes later.
Everyone sat silently.
Michael finally said:
“Uncle Raymond moved the instruments.”
Evelyn stared at the cassette.
“Before the fire.”
For fifty years, the Parker family had treated Samuel and Rose as though they were connected to the missing instruments.
But the tape suggested someone else had already planned to remove them.
