Chapter 8 — The Voice From the Ravine
Search teams followed the service trail Leah had taken.
Michael and Evan were asked to remain near the ranger station.
Almost ninety minutes passed.
Then Cole’s radio came alive.
“Possible response near Cedar Ravine.”
Cole ran.
The search team found Leah nearly a mile from the overlook.
She was sitting beneath a rock shelf.
Cold.
Exhausted.
But alive.
Her ankle had twisted while running down the narrow trail.
She couldn’t climb back.
Her phone had no signal.
When rescuers reached her, the first thing Leah asked was:
“Did you find the card?”
Cole nodded.
“We did.”
She closed her eyes in relief.
Later, after medical staff examined her, Leah explained the rest.
She had confronted Aaron that morning.
Then the railing broke beneath her.
When Aaron caught her, she believed he had deliberately tampered with it.
She ran.
On the trail, she realized Marcus was approaching from the opposite direction.
She became terrified.
She removed the memory card from her camera and threw it into the brush.
Then she took a smaller animal trail toward Cedar Ravine.
“Did Marcus follow you?” Cole asked.
“For a while.”
“Did he say anything?”
Leah nodded.
“He kept yelling that I was destroying people’s lives over a few photographs.”
Then she told Cole something even more important.
Before running, Leah had activated the audio recorder on her phone.
It had captured Marcus speaking.
