Chapter 9 — What Marcus Said
The recording began with wind and footsteps.
Then Marcus’s voice appeared.
“Give me the card, Leah.”
Leah answered:
“You removed the railing bolts.”
Marcus laughed.
“It was supposed to scare you away from the overlook, not break while you were standing there.”
Cole stopped the recording.
Nobody in the room spoke.
He played the rest.
Marcus admitted he had loosened parts of the railing after discovering Leah’s camera position.
He wanted the overlook closed temporarily.
If inspectors found damage, he believed they would restrict the area.
That would give him time to remove his equipment from the valley before Leah could lead anyone there.
He claimed he never intended anyone to be hurt.
But he had deliberately damaged a public safety barrier.
And then followed Leah when she fled.
Park officers found Marcus’s truck near an old maintenance road.
Inside were tools.
Cut chains.
Two park-owned wildlife cameras.
And additional memory cards containing images from the restricted valley.
Aaron cooperated fully after that.
He admitted accepting money from Marcus.
He admitted entering restricted areas.
And he admitted lying when Cole first questioned him at the overlook.
“Why lie when Leah was missing?” Michael later asked him.
Aaron looked ashamed.
“Because the first thing I thought about was losing my job.”
Michael shook his head.
“And she was somewhere in the forest.”
Aaron nodded.
“I know.”
