Emma Was Blamed for a Missing Heirloom — Then Sarah Saw Its Tracker Inside Aunt Nicole’s Handbag
Chapter 7 — Martin Hale’s Envelope
Helen had given a sealed envelope to family attorney Martin Hale shortly before her death.
She instructed him to deliver it to Sarah after the estate was settled.
That never happened.
Sarah called him immediately.
Martin was retired now.
When she mentioned Helen’s name, he became quiet.
“I’ve been wondering whether this day would come.”
Sarah’s anger rose.
“You had something for me.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you give it to me?”
Martin sighed.
After Helen died, Nicole had contacted him.
She told him Sarah was emotionally overwhelmed.
She asked whether the letter could be delayed.
Nicole looked horrified.
“I didn’t know what was inside.”
Martin continued.
He agreed to wait several months.
Then his law practice merged with another firm.
The envelope was archived.
Years passed.
“That’s unbelievable,” Sarah said.
“I agree.”
Martin apologized.
The envelope was still in his secured files.
He delivered it personally the next morning.
Sarah opened it at home.
Helen’s handwriting covered six pages.
The first sentence broke her heart.
Sarah, I should have told you this when you were old enough to understand, and I am sorry that fear kept making me wait.
Helen told the entire story.
Rebecca.
The adoption.
Eleanor.
And the name Lucy.
Then came something Sarah hadn’t expected.
Never mistake biology for the measure of how deeply you were wanted.
Sarah began crying.
Helen explained that she and David had desperately wanted Sarah.
That Rebecca loved her too.
The adoption had not been an abandonment.
It had been a decision made by three adults trying to give a baby stability.
Then the final page mentioned Nicole.
