Chapter 8 — Why Nicole Was Afraid
Helen had worried that Nicole might misunderstand the truth.
Nicole was already seven when Sarah joined the family.
Helen and David told her Sarah had “come to live with them.”
As Nicole grew older, she began asking questions.
Helen avoided them.
That created resentment.
Nicole sometimes felt Sarah received more attention.
More protection.
More softness.
She never knew why.
Helen wrote:
I fear Nicole may one day believe that telling you the truth changes what belongs to either of you. It does not.
Sarah looked at her sister.
Nicole had tears in her eyes.
“That’s what I was scared of.”
Sarah frowned.
“What?”
Nicole finally admitted everything.
Several months earlier, while helping sort Helen’s old tax papers, she found a note referencing Sarah’s adoption.
She panicked.
Not because Sarah was adopted.
Because Nicole believed Helen’s letter might reveal that the family inheritance had been divided differently.
“You thought I was getting more?” Sarah asked.
Nicole nodded.
“Or everything.”
“So you searched my jewelry box.”
Nicole looked ashamed.
“Yes.”
“Then when Emma walked in…”
“I panicked.”
“So you put the pendant in your bag and acted like it was missing.”
Nicole nodded.
Sarah stared at her.
“You were willing to make my daughter look like a thief because you were afraid of a letter you hadn’t even read.”
Nicole started crying.
“I know.”
Sarah’s voice stayed calm.
“No. I don’t think you do yet.”
