Sarah couldn’t speak.
Nicole stood beside her, equally stunned.
Eleanor explained slowly.
Rebecca had been twenty when she became pregnant.
The baby’s father disappeared before the birth.
Rebecca struggled emotionally and financially.
Helen was one of her closest friends.
After Sarah was born, Rebecca tried raising her.
But after several weeks, she became seriously ill.
Helen began helping.
Then Rebecca made a painful decision.
She asked Helen and her husband, David, to adopt the baby.
The adoption was legal.
Private.
And closed.
Helen renamed Lucy.
Sarah.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?” Sarah whispered.
Eleanor looked down.
“Rebecca planned to.”
“Where is she?”
Eleanor’s eyes filled again.
Rebecca died when Sarah was twelve.
Sarah closed her eyes.
A biological mother she never knew existed had been gone for years.
Nicole sat beside her.
“Mom never told me either.”
Eleanor nodded.
“Helen was afraid.”
“Of what?”
“Losing Sarah.”
The adoption was secure.
There had been no legal danger.
But emotionally, Helen feared that telling Sarah would change their relationship.
Every year she postponed the conversation.
Eventually, the secret became harder to admit.
“Then why the letter?” Sarah asked.
Eleanor looked at her.
“Because Helen finally decided silence had become worse than the truth.”
Sarah’s eyes filled.
“Where is it?”
