Chapter 3 — Why Ava Put the Money in the Drawer
Nicole looked toward the little wooden drawer.
“Why did you put the money there?”
Ava sniffled.
“Lost things.”
Sarah smiled faintly.
The drawer had become their informal lost-property box.
Keys.
Coins.
Hair clips.
A missing watch strap.
Anything found around the downstairs rooms went there until someone claimed it.
Two months earlier, Sarah had specifically taught Ava:
“If you find something that isn’t yours, put it in the drawer and tell me.”
Ava had followed the rule exactly.
“Did you tell Mommy?” Nicole asked.
Ava nodded.
“Mommy was phone.”
Sarah suddenly remembered.
She had been speaking with the bakery when Ava tugged at her shirt.
Ava said something about money.
Sarah held up one finger and mouthed:
One minute.
Then the bakery conversation continued.
By the time the call ended, another delivery arrived.
Sarah forgot to ask what Ava wanted.
“You did try to tell me,” Sarah said.
Ava nodded.
“I said money in drawer.”
Sarah closed her eyes briefly.
“You’re right.”
Nicole looked embarrassed.
Everything Ava had done was responsible.
She found money.
Put it somewhere safe.
Tried to tell an adult.
Then less than an hour later, Nicole found a shortage and treated those exact actions as evidence of theft.
Nicole crouched beside her.
“Ava.”
The little girl looked toward Sarah instead.
Nicole noticed.
“I need to apologize.”
Ava stayed quiet.
“You did not take my money.”
“You found Mr. Owen’s money and put it somewhere safe.”
“I should have asked you what happened before I said you took anything.”
Ava whispered:
“You said stealing.”
Nicole’s face tightened.
She had.
At one point she had told Ava:
“Taking money that isn’t yours is stealing.”
She had delivered the lesson before proving the act.
“I shouldn’t have said that about you.”
Nicole took a breath.
“I’m sorry.”
Ava did not immediately hug her.
Nicole did not ask her to.
