Chapter 9 — Nicole Tells the Family What Happened
The anniversary lunch went well.
Sarah’s parents were genuinely surprised.
Her mother cried when she saw the family photographs.
Her father pretended he wasn’t crying.
Nobody believed him.
After dessert, Owen’s forgotten cash came up in conversation.
Michael laughed.
“Two hundred and forty dollars beside a robot vacuum?”
Sarah nodded.
“Ava found it.”
Her grandfather smiled.
“Good job.”
Ava looked toward Nicole.
Nicole knew what the child was waiting for.
She could allow the story to end there.
Ava found money.
Ava returned it.
Everybody applauds.
But that would hide the uncomfortable part.
Nicole put down her fork.
“Actually, there’s more.”
Sarah looked toward her.
Nicole continued.
“I thought cash from my event envelope was missing.”
“Then I found out Ava had picked up those bills.”
“And I accused her of taking my money.”
The table became quiet.
Nicole’s mother frowned.
“But it wasn’t your money?”
“No.”
“And mine wasn’t missing either.”
Michael raised an eyebrow.
Nicole sighed.
“I forgot I’d already paid the florist and Michael.”
Her father looked toward Ava.
“So she did everything right?”
Nicole nodded.
“Everything.”
Then she looked at her niece.
“And I did not.”
Ava continued eating cake.
She appeared much less interested in Nicole’s public accountability than the adults were.
That was probably healthy.
Nicole did not make the moment bigger.
She simply corrected the story in front of the same family members who might otherwise hear a vague version later.
Ava had not taken anything.
Period.
