Chapter 6 — Nicole Realizes What She Actually Did
Nicole sat quietly for several minutes.
Then she said:
“This is worse.”
Sarah knew what she meant.
If cash had genuinely disappeared, suspicion would still not justify accusing Ava without evidence.
But there had not even been a theft to investigate.
Nicole misremembered her own spending.
Then searched for someone who could explain the difference.
She saw Ava.
She remembered Ava had been playing in the kitchen.
Then Ava admitted she found cash.
Nicole’s mind locked everything together.
Missing money.
Ava nearby.
Ava found cash.
Therefore:
Ava took it.
Except the first fact was wrong.
No money was missing.
The second fact proved nothing.
Ava being nearby was only proximity.
And the third fact actually showed Ava had done something responsible.
Every piece of Nicole’s conclusion collapsed when checked.
Sarah looked at her sister.
“Why did you go straight to Ava?”
Nicole sighed.
There was another uncomfortable answer.
The previous month, Ava had taken several coins from Nicole’s purse.
Not secretly to buy anything.
She was playing shop.
She placed the coins inside a toy cash register.
When Nicole asked where they were, Ava immediately showed her.
Sarah had explained that real money was not for games.
Ava apologized.
Nothing similar happened again.
But Nicole remembered it.
“I thought she’d done the same thing again.”
Sarah nodded.
“Except you didn’t ask whether she did.”
“No.”
“You treated an old mistake like evidence for a new accusation.”
Nicole looked down.
“Yes.”
Sarah’s voice softened.
“Kids need consequences when they actually do something.”
“But they can’t spend forever being guilty because they made one mistake before.”
Nicole nodded.
