Richard contacted the small music publisher that still managed Winter Morning.
The song no longer earned much.
That wasn’t the point.
Richard wanted the historical credit corrected.
He provided the 1974 recording.
Old notebooks.
Thomas’s handwritten melody.
And a sworn statement explaining the song’s origin.
Where possible, future releases and archival listings would identify:
RICHARD LAWSON & THOMAS BELL.
Richard also contacted the local radio station that still played the song each December.
He asked to appear on their Christmas program.
The host expected nostalgia.
Instead, Richard told the real story.
“For years, people have introduced Winter Morning as my Christmas song.”
He paused.
“That’s only half right.”
Then he said Thomas’s name.
On air.
Clearly.
No excuse.
No attempt to reduce his own contribution.
“Thomas Bell wrote this song with me when we were seventeen.”
Elena listened from Oregon.
She cried.
Later she called Richard.
“Dad would’ve liked that.”
Richard looked toward the old photograph she had sent.
“I wish I’d said it to him.”
Elena answered:
“So do I.”
Then she added:
“But saying it now still matters.”
