Sophie Was Blamed for Ruining Christmas — Then the Living Room Camera Showed the Real Culprit Had Four Paws

Chapter 3 — The Song Everyone Thought Richard Wrote Alone

Michael sat across from his father.

“Did Thomas write Winter Morning?”

Richard immediately shook his head.

“Not alone.”

“Then who did?”

Richard closed his eyes.

“We did.”

Michael stared at him.

The official record listed:

Written and composed by Richard Lawson.

No Thomas Bell.

No co-writer.

Richard began explaining.

It was December 1974.

They were seventeen.

A snowstorm canceled school.

Thomas came to Richard’s house carrying his guitar.

They spent the entire afternoon writing.

Thomas created the opening melody.

Richard developed the chorus.

They traded lyrics back and forth.

By midnight, the song existed.

Rough.

Simple.

But recognizable.

“Then why is only your name on it?” Michael asked.

Richard’s expression tightened.

Because five years later, Richard was trying to start a music career.

He needed songs for a small Christmas record.

He found their old notebook.

He rewrote parts of Winter Morning.

Changed two verses.

Changed the bridge.

Then recorded it.

“Did you ask Thomas?”

Richard was silent.

Michael understood.

“You didn’t.”

“I couldn’t find him.”

“That’s different from asking.”

Richard looked ashamed.

Thomas had left town after high school.

His father became ill.

The family moved.

Letters stopped.

Years passed.

Richard convinced himself the final version was different enough to call his own.

Then the song became popular.

That made admitting the truth harder.

Sophie pointed toward the note.

“Did Thomas put that in your ornament?”

Richard stared at the broken glass.

“I don’t know.”

Then he remembered something.

That ornament had arrived anonymously on Christmas Eve in 1987.
