Sophie Was Blamed for Ruining Christmas — Then the Living Room Camera Showed the Real Culprit Had Four Paws

Chapter 6 — Thomas’s Recording

Elena mailed Richard a package.

Inside was Thomas’s matching ornament.

Unlike Richard’s, it had never broken.

There was also a USB drive containing digitized family recordings.

One file was labeled:

WINTER MORNING — ORIGINAL — 1974.

Richard’s hands trembled.

He pressed play.

Tape hiss.

A guitar chord.

Then teenage Thomas laughing.

“Richard, you missed the change again.”

A younger Richard answered:

“Because your change makes no sense.”

Thomas laughed harder.

Then they began playing.

The melody was unmistakable.

Cruder than the recorded version.

But it was Winter Morning.

Both voices sang.

Both interrupted each other.

Both changed words mid-song.

At one point Richard said:

“That line is yours. Keep it.”

Then Thomas replied:

“Only if we split everything fifty-fifty when we’re famous.”

The teenagers burst out laughing.

Michael looked at his father.

Richard was crying.

“We were joking.”

“Maybe.”

Michael pointed toward the speakers.

“But there’s no question you wrote it together.”

Richard nodded.

“No.”

There wasn’t.

The tape did not prove Richard had maliciously stolen the song.

But it proved the family story was incomplete.

Winter Morning did not begin with one songwriter in a studio.

It began with two teenagers trapped indoors by snow.

One piano.

One guitar.

And a friendship Richard had allowed to disappear.
