The old family home had been sold years earlier.
But Margaret still possessed several boxes from the attic.
They searched them the next morning.
Nothing.
Then Daniel remembered something.
After Charles died, Margaret donated many of his belongings to the local Veterans Heritage Center.
Uniforms.
Photographs.
Old maps.
And several camera bags.
Emily called the center.
The curator searched the catalog.
One item matched.
Brown canvas camera satchel — donated 2002.
Margaret nearly dropped the phone.
They drove there.
The satchel had remained in storage for more than twenty years.
A curator opened it with them present.
Inside were old film rolls.
A lens cloth.
Two camera manuals.
Then Daniel reached into a narrow inner pocket.
His fingers touched paper.
He pulled out an envelope.
Charles’s handwriting covered the front.
Then another.
And another.
There were nine letters.
Margaret started crying.
“They’re all here.”
Daniel covered his face.
The letters had never been stolen from the family permanently.
They had remained hidden where a frightened teenager put them.
Then been donated without anyone checking the inner pocket.
Elaine had lost her sister over something she never touched.
Margaret held one of Charles’s letters.
“Twenty-six years.”
Emily looked at her.
“Call Elaine.”
Margaret shook her head.
“I don’t know if she’ll answer.”
Daniel quietly said:
“She will.”
Margaret looked at him.
“How do you know?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Because she didn’t come here only to leave that photograph.”
He looked toward Sophie.
“She came because she wanted you to finally know where to find her.”
