Emily had never heard the name Elaine.
Not once.
No photographs.
No birthday stories.
No mention at Christmas.
Nothing.
Margaret sat on the edge of the bed.
“Elaine was four years younger than me.”
Emily stared at her mother.
“And you just erased her?”
Margaret flinched.
“It wasn’t that simple.”
Elaine Dawson had once been the person Margaret trusted most.
The sisters lived only fifteen minutes apart.
They raised their children together.
Shared holidays.
Shared vacations.
Then came one terrible summer.
Margaret’s husband, Charles, had been seriously ill.
The family was exhausted.
During that time, a collection of letters disappeared from Charles’s study.
Not ordinary letters.
They were written by Charles during his years in the military.
Margaret considered them irreplaceable.
Several weeks later, one of the envelopes was found inside Elaine’s car.
Margaret confronted her.
Elaine insisted she had never taken the letters.
Margaret didn’t believe her.
Neither did Charles.
The argument destroyed the relationship.
Elaine moved away within months.
Eventually, all communication stopped.
“And you never told me?” Emily asked.
Margaret shook her head.
“I was ashamed.”
“Of her?”
Margaret looked down.
“Of everything.”
Emily looked back at the camera recording.
“How did she get into my house?”
Sophie suddenly whispered:
“She had a key.”
Emily turned.
“You saw it?”
Sophie nodded.
“She said Grandma would know.”
Margaret’s expression changed again.
“Know what?”
Sophie pointed toward her stuffed bunny.
“She put something inside him.”
