Emily still had one major question.
“How did Elaine get into my house?”
Daniel looked embarrassed again.
“I gave her the key.”
Emily stared at him.
“You did what?”
Daniel explained.
Several months earlier, Emily gave him a spare key while the family was traveling.
He never returned it.
When Elaine contacted him recently, she said she had found the photograph proving Daniel had handled Charles’s letters.
She wanted Margaret to see it.
But she refused to meet face-to-face.
“Why?” Margaret asked.
Daniel looked toward her.
“Because she was afraid you’d accuse her again.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
Elaine originally planned to leave the photograph inside an envelope on Emily’s table.
Instead, Daniel suggested hiding it inside the old stuffed bunny.
He remembered the zipper from childhood.
“Why not just mail it?” Emily asked.
Daniel sighed.
Elaine had mailed Margaret letters before.

Every one had been returned unopened.

“I never received anything.”
Daniel frowned.
“She has them.”
Margaret shook her head.
“No.”

After Charles died, Margaret’s mother, Dorothy, stayed with her for almost a year.
Dorothy hated what the accusation had done to the family.
She blamed Elaine for refusing to apologize.
