Sophie Kept Pointing Toward the Hallway — Then the Camera Showed a Woman Grandma Margaret Hadn’t Seen in 26 Years

Chapter 3 — Inside the Bunny

Margaret looked at the stuffed bunny in her hands.

It had belonged to Emily when she was a child.

Years later, Emily gave it to Sophie.

Its fabric was faded.

One ear leaned slightly sideways.

Emily turned it over.

There was a tiny zipper beneath the back seam.

She had forgotten it existed.

Margaret hadn’t.

“I sewed that zipper in myself.”

Emily opened it.

Inside the stuffing was a small white envelope.

Across the front:

MARGARET.

The handwriting made Margaret gasp.

“Elaine wrote this.”

Emily handed it to her.

Margaret opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

And a short note.

The photograph showed Charles’s old study.

Date stamped in one corner:

JULY 3, 2000.

The year the letters disappeared.

In the photograph, a teenage boy stood beside Charles’s desk.

He was holding one of the missing military envelopes.

Emily stared.

“Who is that?”

Margaret whispered:

“Daniel.”

Emily frowned.

Daniel was Margaret’s oldest son.

Emily’s brother.

He had been sixteen at the time.

Margaret read Elaine’s note.

I found this while clearing Mom’s old camera boxes. I think we blamed the wrong person.

Margaret’s hands began trembling.

The note continued:

There’s more. Ask Daniel what happened on July 3.

Emily looked at her mother.

“Uncle Daniel took the letters?”

Margaret stared at the photograph.

“I don’t know.”

But for the first time in twenty-six years…

she was no longer certain Elaine had.
