Chapter 5 — The Bikes Frank Had Already Sold

Walter explained.

The previous Saturday, Frank had been cleaning a yellow racing bicycle in his driveway.

Walter stopped to admire it.

Frank told him:

“Picked it up cheap.”

Walter thought nothing of it.

Now the garage full of numbered bicycles changed the memory.

“What number was it?” Michael asked.

Frank shook his head.

“I don’t remember.”

Michael looked toward the tags.

“But you keep an inventory.”

Silence.

Noah suddenly pointed toward a clipboard hanging beside the garage workbench.

Frank immediately moved toward it.

Michael did not enter the garage.

“Frank, don’t destroy anything.”

Frank stopped.

“It’s my paperwork.”

“Then leave it where it is.”

Mrs. Alvarez had already called the non-emergency police number.

Frank heard her speaking.

His face reddened.

“You called the police over bicycles?”

She stared at him.

“You have my grandson’s property inside your garage.”

“Yes.”

Within twenty minutes, an officer arrived.

Officer Daniels listened to each person separately.

He did not immediately declare every bicycle stolen.

Instead, he asked Frank:

“Do these bicycles belong to you?”

Frank answered:

“Some.”

“Which ones?”

Frank hesitated.

“The ones I’ve restored.”

Officer Daniels frowned.

“Repairing something does not automatically make it yours.”

Frank looked annoyed.

The officer asked about Noah’s red bike.

Michael showed photographs.

One was from Noah’s birthday six months earlier.

The red bicycle was clearly visible.

So was the blue rear reflector.

Michael also had an old photograph from Sophie showing the S.M. initials beneath the seat before she gave it to Noah.

Officer Daniels looked toward Frank.

“Where did you obtain this bike?”

Frank answered:

“Near their sidewalk.”

Noah immediately said:

“Beside our steps.”

The officer wrote both statements down.

Then he looked toward the clipboard.

“What’s on that?”

Frank said nothing.

Officer Daniels obtained Frank’s permission to inspect it after explaining that Frank could refuse until the appropriate legal process was followed.

Frank reluctantly handed it over.

The first page contained numbered entries.

Bike 31 — red youth — 12/04.

Beside it:

Front steps, Miller house.

Michael stared.

Frank’s own notes destroyed his claim that Noah’s bicycle had been abandoned near a public sidewalk.

Then Officer Daniels turned to the earlier pages.

And beside several already-sold bicycles were prices.
