Noah Recognized His Missing Red Bicycle Outside a Neighbor’s Garage — Then the Door Opened and Revealed Rows of Bikes Hidden Inside
Chapter 11 — Frank Had Seen the Bike Years Earlier
Sophie explained.
Six years earlier, she visited Michael while riding the restored red bicycle.
Frank saw it.
He came over and asked whether she wanted to sell it.
Sophie laughed and said no.
It had been hers since childhood.
She told Frank about the S.M. initials under the seat.
She even showed them to him.
“You’re sure?” Michael asked.
“Completely.”
Then Sophie remembered something else.
When she later gave the bike to Noah, Frank was outside.
He had seen Noah riding it.
Michael looked across the street.
Frank was speaking with Officer Daniels.
The claim that he picked up an anonymous abandoned red bicycle became even less credible.
Frank knew the bike.
Knew Sophie had owned it.
Had seen it passed to Noah.
And still removed it from beside Michael’s porch.
Michael told Officer Daniels about Sophie’s statement.
The officer took her contact information for a formal account.
Noah looked toward Frank.
“He knew it was mine?”
Michael answered carefully.
“It sounds like he had enough information to know it belonged to our family.”
Noah frowned.
“Then why did he say it was his?”
Michael looked toward his son.
“Because sometimes people keep defending a bad decision after the truth gets uncomfortable.”
Noah thought about that.
Then:
“Like lying?”
“Sometimes, yes.”
The investigation expanded over the following week.
Police compared Frank’s notebook with reported missing bicycles from the surrounding neighborhoods.
More matches appeared.
Some owners had serial numbers.
Others had photographs or unique modifications.
Several already-sold bicycles were traced through phone numbers Frank recorded.
Most buyers claimed they had no idea the bikes were stolen.
They believed Frank repaired legitimate secondhand bicycles.
Then investigators spoke with Carl, Frank’s nephew.
Carl produced messages between himself and Frank.
Most appeared ordinary.
Got another bike for repair.
Can you replace this chain?
What do you think this one will sell for?
But one conversation was different.
Carl had asked Frank directly:
Are you sure these aren’t being reported missing?
Frank’s reply was still on the phone.
And it showed Frank understood perfectly well that some owners were searching for their property.
