Noah Recognized His Missing Red Bicycle Outside a Neighbor’s Garage — Then the Door Opened and Revealed Rows of Bikes Hidden Inside
Chapter 7 — The Cut Lock
Officer Daniels looked directly at Frank.
“Explain this.”
Frank stared at the notebook.
“That one had been there for days.”
“How many days?”
“Three or four.”
“At a school bike rack?”
Frank nodded reluctantly.
“It looked abandoned.”
Michael stared at him.
“So you cut the lock.”
Frank said:
“I assumed the school would have removed it eventually.”
Officer Daniels responded:
“You are not the school.”
The line changed everything.
Frank could no longer frame his behavior as simply collecting unattended objects.
He had encountered a bicycle secured with a lock.
He knew someone intended to keep it.
And he took it anyway.
“Where is Bike 19?” the officer asked.
Frank looked toward the back of the garage.
A white bicycle stood behind two adult mountain bikes.
The officer photographed it.
Then contacted the school resource office.
Within an hour, they confirmed a white bicycle had been reported missing from the rack two weeks earlier.
The owner was a seventh-grade student named Amelia Grant.
Her father had reported the lock cut.
Noah looked at Michael.
“So he knew.”
Michael nodded slowly.
“At least with that bike, there isn’t much room to say he thought nobody wanted it.”
Frank overheard.
“I made a mistake with that one.”
Michael looked at him.
“One?”
Frank became quiet.
Officer Daniels continued reviewing the list.
Bike 22 had been taken from an apartment rack.
Bike 24 from beside a grocery store.
Bike 26 from outside a recreation center.
Bike 28 from a driveway.
Noah’s bike was 31.
There were thirty-one recorded bicycles in less than a year.
Then the officer turned to the final page.
There was another column Michael had not noticed.
Buyer.
Some entries had first names.
Some phone numbers.
Several were blank.
That meant some of the already-sold bicycles might still be recoverable.
But one name appeared again and again.
Carl.
Officer Daniels looked toward Frank.
“Who’s Carl?”
Frank’s face tightened.
And Michael realized Frank may not have been selling all those bicycles by himself.
