Chapter 8 — Why Edward Kept the Medal
Rebecca finally understood why Edward refused to display the silver medal beside his own awards.
It had never been a trophy.
It was a promise.
Frank had told him:
“Keep it until somebody believes me.”
Edward believed Frank.
But he failed to say it loudly enough when it mattered.
So he kept the medal.
Year after year.
Not because it belonged to him.
Because returning it without clearing Frank’s name felt like admitting the story was finished.
Walter looked toward Rebecca.
“I asked Edward for it once.”
Rebecca remembered.
“After Grandpa’s funeral.”
Walter nodded.
He hadn’t explained why.
He was embarrassed.
Rebecca responded defensively.
Then the family began clearing Edward’s house.
Walter feared the medal would be sold, donated, or lost.
When he saw the estate package sitting on Lauren’s porch, he recognized Edward’s handwriting on the inventory label.
He opened it.
Saw the velvet case.
And took it.
“I told myself it was mine anyway.”
Lauren looked at him.
“It still wasn’t yours to take from our porch.”
Walter nodded.
“I know.”
Then Rebecca surprised him.
She pushed the velvet case across the table.
Walter stared at her.
“What are you doing?”
“Grandpa’s letter is pretty clear.”
She looked toward the medal.
“This belongs with Frank’s family.”
Walter didn’t pick it up immediately.
“After what I did?”
Rebecca answered:
“Giving it back doesn’t mean what you did was okay.”
Then she added:
“It means we’re not going to make another mistake last fifty years.”
