Mia Was Blamed for Taking Something From Aunt Rebecca’s Package — Then the Porch Camera Showed Who Really Reached Into the Box

Chapter 2 — Mr. Ellis

Walter Ellis had lived beside Grandpa Edward for almost thirty years.

He was seventy-nine now.

Quiet.

Polite.

The kind of neighbor who collected mail when someone traveled and shoveled snow without being asked.

Lauren had known him since childhood.

Nothing about him suggested he would steal from a package.

Rebecca immediately called him.

No answer.

Again.

Voicemail.

Lauren turned toward Mia.

“What exactly did he say to you?”

Mia thought carefully.

Walter had opened the box.

He saw the blue velvet case.

Then whispered:

“So Edward kept it after all.”

Mia asked what it was.

Walter opened the case.

Inside was a silver medal hanging from a faded ribbon.

Then Walter told Mia:

“This belonged to somebody in my family.”

“Did he tell you not to say anything?” Lauren asked.

Mia shook her head.

“He said Aunt Rebecca would understand.”

Rebecca stared at her.

“I absolutely do not understand.”

But Lauren noticed something.

Rebecca seemed angry.

Not completely surprised.

“Have you heard Walter talk about that medal before?”

Rebecca hesitated.

“Once.”

Lauren folded her arms.

“When?”

“After Grandpa’s funeral.”

Walter had approached Rebecca privately.

He asked whether Edward’s military belongings had been found.

Rebecca said she didn’t know.

Then Walter asked one very specific question.

“Was there a silver medal with a blue-and-white ribbon?”

Rebecca remembered because of how nervous he looked.

“What did you say?” Lauren asked.

“That if anything belonged to Grandpa, it would stay with the family.”

Lauren stared at her sister.

“Maybe that’s why he took it himself.”

Rebecca looked toward the empty velvet wrapping.

Then said:

“Or maybe Grandpa had something that never belonged to him.”
