Chapter 5 — Three Days Earlier
The equipment room camera showed shelves, ball bags, training cones, and several club cases.
Sarah rewound to the afternoon Ryan’s gear disappeared.
At 5:42 PM, Ryan entered.
He changed shoes.
Placed his blue jersey inside his bag.
Then left.
His equipment bag remained on the bench.
At 5:51 PM, Derek entered.
Mason stopped breathing for a moment.
Derek walked directly toward Ryan’s bag.
He looked around.
Then lifted it.
Sarah’s expression hardened.
“Derek.”
He didn’t answer.
On the screen, Derek removed Ryan’s shoes and jersey.
He placed them inside the same black equipment case.
Then carried the case beyond the camera’s view.
Ryan’s original bag was pushed behind several boxes.
Mason stared at him.
“You took it.”
Derek stepped backward.
“There’s context.”
Sarah nearly laughed.
“I’m very interested in the context.”
Derek looked toward Tyler.
Then toward Mason.
“Ryan wasn’t supposed to play last weekend.”
Sarah frowned.
“Why not?”
“Because he needed to learn a lesson.”
“For what?”
Derek’s answer stunned everyone.
“For refusing the offer.”
Mason looked at Sarah.
“What offer?”
Sarah didn’t know.
But Derek clearly did.
