Detective Wells located Evelyn in Vermont.
She was forty-one now.
She worked at a small historical archive.
She had never married.
And when police told her Margaret was still alive, she began crying.
But Evelyn denied entering Victoria’s house.
She had not placed the card on the table.
She had not taken the cedar box.
She didn’t even know Victoria still lived there.
That left another question.
Who had restarted everything?
The answer came from the home’s exterior camera.
Grace’s bicycle had blocked part of the driveway camera three days earlier.
But another camera above the garage captured a vehicle arriving shortly after noon.
James stepped out.
Victoria stared at the screen.
Her husband had claimed he was already away on business that day.
He wasn’t.
The footage showed James entering the house.
Twenty minutes later, he left carrying the cedar box.
When confronted, James finally confessed.
He had discovered the box months earlier.
Inside were old papers connecting Robert Lane to questionable property transactions.
James brought them to Robert.
Robert panicked.
He ordered James to destroy everything.
James couldn’t.
Instead, he removed the box and stored it in his office.
“Then who put the place card there?” Victoria asked.
James looked down.
“I did.”
Victoria stared at him.
James had recently discovered Robert was preparing to sell his interest in Harper & Lane and leave the country.
He realized the old evidence might disappear forever.
He wanted Victoria to start asking questions.
But he was afraid to tell her directly because he had already concealed the box.
“So you staged this?”
James nodded.
“The card. The photograph. The envelope.”
Victoria looked furious.
“You frightened my mother and involved Grace instead of simply telling me the truth.”
“I didn’t expect Grace to find the card first.”
Victoria’s expression hardened.
“That’s the problem with secrets.”
“You don’t get to choose who finds them.”
