Grace Found an Old Place Card at the Family Table — Then Grandma Margaret Said, “You Told Me You Got Rid of Everything
Chapter 3 — The Envelope Beneath the Chair
Victoria searched the dining room.
Nothing appeared disturbed.
The windows were locked.
The patio doors were closed.
Then Margaret noticed something beneath Evelyn’s old chair.
A corner of white paper.
Victoria bent down.
It was an envelope.
No stamp.
No address.
Only one handwritten word:
VICTORIA.
Margaret gripped the table.
“That’s Evelyn’s handwriting.”
Victoria looked at her.
“You can’t know that after seventeen years.”
“I raised her.”
Victoria opened the envelope.
Inside was a single photograph.
It showed the dining room.
The same table.
The same chairs.
But the photograph had been taken recently.
Very recently.
A digital date appeared in the corner.
THREE DAYS AGO.
Margaret sat down heavily.
“Someone has been inside this house.”
Victoria turned the photograph over.
A message was written on the back.
YOU KEPT THE WRONG BOX.
Victoria’s expression changed.
Margaret noticed.
“What box?”
“I don’t know.”
Margaret stared at her daughter.
“Don’t do this again.”
Victoria looked away.
“What?”
“Don’t decide that hiding something will protect everyone.”
Victoria sat silently.
Then finally admitted the truth.
After Evelyn disappeared, Victoria found a wooden box beneath her sister’s bed.
She never told police.
Margaret’s mouth fell open.
“You found something in Evelyn’s room and never told anyone?”
Victoria whispered:
“Because of what was inside.”
