Grace Found an Old Place Card at the Family Table — Then Grandma Margaret Said, “You Told Me You Got Rid of Everything

Chapter 2 — The Sister Grace Never Knew

Grace was only nine, but she immediately understood when adults were hiding something.

Victoria took the place card from her.

“Go upstairs, sweetheart.”

Grace didn’t move.

“Why have you never told me about her?”

“It’s complicated.”

“Is she dead?”

Victoria looked toward Margaret.

Neither answered.

Grace’s voice became quieter.

“You don’t know?”

Margaret finally spoke.

“No.”

Victoria closed her eyes.

“That’s enough.”

Grace reluctantly left.

The moment her footsteps disappeared upstairs, Victoria turned toward Margaret.

“Why would you tell her that?”

Margaret stared at the place card.

“Because she asked.”

“She is nine.”

“And we have spent seventeen years pretending Evelyn never sat at this table.”

Victoria looked angry.

“You agreed.”

Margaret nodded.

“I agreed because I thought forgetting would hurt less.”

She looked around the dining room.

“It didn’t.”

The place card came from Margaret’s fiftieth birthday dinner.

Evelyn had been twenty-four.

Victoria was twenty-seven.

They had sat beside each other at that very table.

Six days later, Evelyn disappeared.

Her car was found at a train station.

Her wallet remained inside.

Her suitcase was gone.

No confirmed sighting ever followed.

Police investigated.

Friends were questioned.

Hospitals were contacted.

Nothing.

After several years, Margaret stopped displaying photographs of Evelyn.

Victoria packed away her belongings.

Eventually, neither woman spoke her name.

But Victoria still had one question.

“How did the card get back on the table?”

Margaret looked at her.

“I thought you put it there.”

Victoria shook her head.

“I haven’t seen it in years.”

The two women stared at the empty seat.

Someone had placed Evelyn’s card there that morning.
