Chapter 9 — Vanessa’s Real Plan
Once investigators reviewed Vanessa’s messages, they discovered something she had not fully understood.
Eric never intended for her to simply visit Seattle.
He had instructed her to bring Sophie.
Bring the suitcase.
Bring every item Rachel left behind.
And stay in a hotel booked under Vanessa’s old surname.
He also told her to switch phones after arrival.
Police asked why.
Vanessa had no good answer.
She had allowed herself to believe Eric was only trying to protect himself from an old dispute.
But his planning suggested something much more deliberate.
Investigators prevented the trip.
They also contacted authorities near Seattle.
Eric was questioned about the messages and Rachel’s records.
He denied trying to take Sophie anywhere permanently.
He denied instructing Vanessa to frame the child.
Then investigators played the recorder.
His voice was clear enough to identify.
“You’re sure he’ll believe she took it?”
Then Vanessa:
“I’ll put the money there.”
The recording proved the accusation against Sophie had been planned.
Daniel was furious with Eric.
But he didn’t allow Vanessa to pretend she had merely been manipulated.
She had made choices too.
She planted the money.
She accused Sophie.
She forged Daniel’s signature.
And she prepared to take his daughter on a secret trip.
Vanessa finally admitted it.
“I kept thinking I could fix the next problem before you discovered the previous one.”
Daniel looked at her.
“And every time, Sophie became more involved.”
Vanessa nodded through tears.
“I know.”
