Daniel contacted police.
He handed over the recorder.
The forged travel consent.
The tickets.
And every message Vanessa had received from Eric.
Then he retrieved Rachel’s old storage box.
It had remained unopened in the top of a closet for nearly three years.
Sophie sat beside him.
“Is that Mommy’s?”
Daniel nodded.
“Yeah.”
He opened it carefully.
Photographs filled the top.
A tiny hospital bracelet.
Sophie’s first drawing.
Several sealed letters.
Then, beneath a stack of photo albums, Daniel found a notebook.
Dark green cover.
No label.
Vanessa stared at it.
“That’s what he wants.”
Daniel opened the first page.
Rachel’s handwriting.
At first, it looked ordinary.
Addresses.
Repair costs.
Property names.
Then the notes became more detailed.
Several buildings had reported expensive emergency repairs.
The same contractor appeared repeatedly.
WELLS PROPERTY SERVICES.
Eric’s company.
Rachel had begun questioning invoices.
One building supposedly received a complete roof replacement.
Rachel wrote:
Roof never replaced. Tenant confirms only patchwork completed.
Another invoice listed $38,000 for plumbing repairs.
Rachel wrote:
Actual work under $6,000.
Page after page showed the same pattern.
Inflated bills.
Payments for work that had not happened.
False subcontractors.
And money moving through companies connected to Eric.
Then Daniel found the final page.
Rachel had written one sentence across the bottom.
If anything happens before I finish this, Daniel needs to see the blue envelope.
Daniel looked inside the box.
There was no blue envelope.
