Daniel Played the Recorder Sophie Found — Then Vanessa Mentioned a Suitcase Hidden Upstairs

Chapter 10 — Sophie Presses Play

The investigation into Eric Wells continued long after the suitcase was unpacked.

Rachel’s old records were turned over to the appropriate investigators and attorneys.

Several property transactions were reviewed.

Former employees were interviewed.

And the evidence Rachel preserved finally reached people who could examine it properly.

For Daniel, however, the most immediate concern was Sophie.

Vanessa moved out while Daniel considered what their future would look like.

Before she left, she sat with Sophie at the kitchen counter.

The same place where the accusation had begun.

“I need to tell you something,” Vanessa said.

Sophie held Daniel’s hand.

Vanessa continued.

“You didn’t steal my money.”

Sophie shook her head.

“I told you.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“You did.”

“You put it there.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Vanessa struggled for a moment.

“Because I wanted your dad to believe something that wasn’t true.”

Sophie stared at her.

“That’s lying.”

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.”

“So you were lying when you said I was lying?”

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

Vanessa whispered:

“Yes.”

There was nothing else to hide behind.

Weeks later, Sophie asked Daniel where the little recorder had gone.

“Police have it right now.”

“Will we get it back?”

“Maybe.”

Sophie thought about that.

“It helped me.”

Daniel nodded.

It had.

The recorder was cheap.

Barely larger than a matchbox.

Vanessa had originally used it to record reminders and phone conversations.

She accidentally left it running after meeting Eric.

Then Sophie found it beneath the passenger seat of Vanessa’s car.

She pressed play out of curiosity.

She heard her own name.

Then heard Vanessa discussing money.

Sophie didn’t understand everything.

But she understood enough to bring the recorder into the kitchen.

Vanessa saw it.

Panic followed.

Minutes later, Daniel walked through the door.

If Sophie hadn’t found that recorder, Daniel might have believed the money really was hers.

He might have taken away her tablet exactly as Vanessa expected.

He might never have searched upstairs that evening.

And the suitcase could have left the house the following morning.

Instead, Daniel pressed one button.

A voice said:

“I’ll put the money there…”

Then:

“He’ll believe…”

And finally:

“…the suitcase upstairs.”

Three fragments.

Enough to expose a false accusation.

Enough to uncover forged documents and a secret trip.

Enough to lead Daniel back to something Rachel had hidden years earlier.

One evening, Sophie sat beside him holding Rachel’s old picture book.

“Daddy?”

“Yeah?”

“If I find something weird again, should I tell you?”

Daniel pulled her close.

“Always.”

“Even if somebody says I’ll get in trouble?”

“Especially then.”

Sophie smiled.

The person accused of stealing money that afternoon had never stolen a dollar.

She had simply found the one object Vanessa desperately needed to remain silent.

And once Daniel pressed play…

the story Vanessa had prepared for him began falling apart before she could finish telling it.

THE END
