Chloe Took Maya’s Lunch and Used Her Meal Card — Then the Cafeteria Computer Showed Who the Account Really Belonged To

Chapter 5 — Eleven Days Earlier

The group moved into the cafeteria office.

Mr. Morris opened the security archive.

They searched the date the duplicate card was created.

At 7:38 AM, Linda Shaw entered the office.

She logged into the computer.

Then left several minutes later to handle a delivery.

The computer remained unlocked.

At 7:44, someone entered.

Chloe.

Her face went pale.

On the screen, Chloe looked toward the hallway.

Then sat at Linda’s computer.

She opened the meal-card system.

Mrs. Helen stared at her.

“How did you know how to do that?”

Chloe didn’t answer.

The recording continued.

Chloe typed a student name into the search field.

Then used the card printer.

A red card came out.

She placed it inside her pocket.

Mr. Morris paused the video.

“You didn’t find it.”

Chloe looked at the floor.

“No.”

“You made it.”

She nodded.

Maya looked stunned.

“Why mine?”

Chloe didn’t answer.

Mr. Morris resumed the recording.

Before Chloe left, she opened something else.

A spreadsheet.

Mrs. Helen leaned closer.

It contained student meal-account balances.

Chloe scrolled through the names.

Then stopped on Maya Collins.

Account balance at the time:

$126.40.

Maya had one of the highest balances on the list.

Chloe hadn’t chosen her randomly.

She chose the account because it had money.
