Ben’s locked backpack and confiscated phone at the cafe — Then the security camera footage reveals who actually started the fight
Chapter 3 — The desktop monitor footage playback
The Dell desktop monitor hummed quietly on the counter.
Mark tapped the mouse to bring up the local security software interface.
A grid of four camera feeds materialized on the screen.
The first square displayed a wide-angle view of the front customer seating area.
The second square showed the service counter and the wooden pastry display.
Mark clicked on the first camera feed to enlarge it to full screen.
“Let’s look at the timestamp,” Mark said.
He dragged the playback slider backward to the late afternoon hours.
The grainy video showed the cafe floor during the final hour of the shift.
Sunlight streamed through the front glass windows in long amber diagonals.
Ben appeared on the screen walking past the wooden tables.
He carried a grey cloth and his heavy black backpack over one shoulder.
The primary camera showed Ben setting his backpack down near the register.
Mark leaned in closer to the monitor.
“Right there,” Mark said, pointing a finger at the screen.
“That is where the equipment policy violation happened.”
Sarah crossed her arms and stared intently at the glowing display.
“He just put it down to wipe the table,” Sarah said.
“He didn’t leave it there unattended for hours.”
The video continued playing at standard speed.
Mark did not respond to Sarah’s defense.
He kept his eyes locked on the moving figures inside the digital frame.
On the screen, another person entered the field of view from the side hallway.
Mark can be seen walking over to pick up the bag.
The manager’s digital avatar on screen reached down and lifted the backpack off the counter.
Mark carried the bag toward the back storage room where the glass cabinet stood.
Sarah leaned closer to the monitor, her eyes narrowing at the sequence.
“You grabbed it before he even finished his section,” Sarah noted.
“Because the policy requires immediate compliance,” Mark answered.
The video playback continued for another few seconds.
Then, the image on the Dell monitor hitched awkwardly.
The digital timer at the bottom corner of the screen jumped forward by four minutes in a single frame.
The footage skips the crucial moment right before the bag was lifted.
Ben squinted at the monitor from the side of the counter.
He reached out and tapped the plastic bezel of the screen with his finger.
“Wait, look at the timeline,” Ben said.
“Why does the clock jump from four-twelve straight to four-sixteen?”
