Ben’s locked backpack and confiscated phone at the cafe — Then the security camera footage reveals who actually started the fight

Chapter 7 — Examining the shift logbook

Mark stepped closer to the edge of the desk.

He frowned down at the illuminated screen resting in Sarah’s hand.

“It is just a standard safety hold,” Mark said, his voice tightening defensively.

“We log all disciplinary actions regarding personal electronics during working hours.”

Sarah did not lower the phone.

She kept the glowing screen pointed directly at his face.

“You log them?” Sarah asked.

“Yes,” Mark replied.

“Every single time a staff member violates the cell phone policy on the floor.”

Sarah tapped the screen twice.

The lock screen slid away, revealing the internal system logs and application history.

She slid her thumb across the glass surface.

“Then show me the written record,” Sarah demanded.

Mark blinked.

“What?”

“If this was a logged disciplinary action, where is the physical shift logbook?” Sarah asked.

Mark hesitated for a fraction of a second.

His eyes darted toward the cluttered filing cabinet behind the desk.

“It is in the binder,” Mark muttered.

“Go get it,” Sarah said.

Mark reached down and slid the top drawer of the wooden desk closed with a sharp bang.

He walked past her and pulled a thick leather-bound binder from the top of the filing cabinet.

He dropped the heavy book onto the wooden desk.

Dust motes floated upward in the narrow shaft of light cutting through the blinds.

Mark flipped the stiff cardboard cover open.

The pages were filled with handwritten entries detailing opening duties, temperature checks, and closing rosters.

His finger traced down the column for the afternoon shift.

“Right here,” Mark said, tapping his index finger against a blank line.

“That is where the note goes.”

Sarah leaned over the desk to look at the page.

The line he was pointing to was completely empty.

There was no entry for Ben.

There was no note regarding a confiscated mobile phone.

There was no timestamp or description of a policy violation.

“The line is blank, Mark,” Sarah said quietly.

Mark stared down at the paper.

He flipped the page back and forth, searching for any scribbled remark.

The page remained completely bare.

“Someone must have forgotten to write it down during the rush,” Mark said, his voice losing its confident edge.

Sarah reached down and pointed at the bottom of the page.

“And look right here,” Sarah said.

Mark looked down at the designated approval box.

The bottom of the log page required a mandatory manager signature and timestamp for any property confiscation.

The signature line was completely blank.

Sarah looked up from the book, locking her eyes onto the manager.

“There is no signature,” Sarah said.

“And no manager authorized this removal according to your own written records.”

Mark swallowed hard, his hands resting flat against the edge of the desk.

Sarah did not wait for him to cobble together an excuse.

She dropped the leather binder back onto the wood with a dull thud.

She reached into her coat pocket with her free hand.

Sarah pulled out her own smartphone and tapped the screen twice.
