Chapter 7 — The Photos Mason Forgot About
Mason still tried to minimize what happened.
“I didn’t tell the boy to go down there.”
Cole nodded.
“No.”
“I didn’t push him.”
“No.”
“I had no idea he’d follow.”
“Maybe not.”
Then Cole added:
“But you deliberately opened a closed public barrier and left it unsecured.”
Mason’s clients were interviewed.
Both confirmed he had taken them through the gate.
One woman said:
“I asked whether we were allowed.”
“What did he say?”
She looked embarrassed.
“He said the closure was mostly for tourists who didn’t know the terrain.”
Cole’s expression hardened.
That was false.
The closure applied to everyone.
Then one client remembered taking photographs before descending.
She opened her camera.
Timestamp:
8:17 AM.
The image showed Mason standing beside the closed gate.
Next photograph:
8:18 AM.
Mason’s hand was on the latch.
Next:
8:19 AM.
The gate was open.
All three were walking through.
Another photograph taken at 8:43 showed Mason returning uphill alone.
The open gate remained visible behind him.
Oliver slipped approximately eleven minutes later.
No argument remained.
Mason had opened it.
Then left it open.
But Cole discovered something even more troubling.
This had not been Mason’s first unauthorized photography trip.
Public social-media images from his workshops repeatedly showed Raven’s Window during the two years it had been closed.
Different clients.
Different dates.
Same restricted location.
Mason had been treating a public safety barrier like a gate he personally had permission to ignore.
Oliver was simply the first outsider known to have followed.
