Alex Heard Three Whistle Blasts Below the Mountain Overlook — Then a Ranger Discovered Someone Had Deliberately Opened the Safety Gate

Chapter 6 — Dean Wasn’t Trying to Escape

Cole turned back toward Dean.

“You said you heard the whistle before everyone else.”

Dean nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Dean pointed toward a small side trail.

He had been photographing wildflowers farther from the overlook.

The sound traveled directly up the ravine.

Dean recognized three whistle blasts immediately.

Years of rescue work made the signal impossible to ignore.

He ran toward the overlook.

Saw the open gate.

Then went through.

“You should’ve called first,” Cole said.

“I know.”

“You could’ve become another victim.”

Dean nodded.

“I know that too.”

His muddy gloves came from grabbing exposed roots while descending.

When he reached the washed-out section, he heard Oliver below.

“I shouted that help was coming.”

Oliver nodded.

“I heard him.”

Dean couldn’t reach the boy safely.

So he climbed back.

Then saw Cole arriving.

“Why didn’t you tell me immediately?”

Dean looked ashamed.

“Because I knew I’d broken protocol.”

As a former rescue volunteer, Dean knew better than anyone that unroped solo descent on an unstable closed trail was dangerous.

He feared being blamed.

So when everyone began noticing his muddy gloves…

he tried putting them away.

That made him look far worse.

Alex looked at him.

“You weren’t leaving?”

Dean shook his head.

“My rope bag was in my truck.”

Cole checked.

A full rescue rope kit was sitting inside Dean’s open vehicle.

Dean had also left his phone on the passenger seat while grabbing the gear.

His explanation matched.

The man who looked most suspicious had made a reckless decision.

But he had not opened the gate.

He had been trying to reach Oliver.

Mason, meanwhile, had done something entirely different.

He had created the opportunity for the accident in the first place.
