Chapter 9 — Ranger Cole Closes the Gate for Good
The park service responded quickly.
Mason’s commercial photography permit for other areas of the park was suspended pending review.
His unauthorized use of the closed trail was documented.
The park also contacted previous clients identified through workshop records.
Several admitted being taken beyond the barrier.
Most had believed Mason possessed special permission.
He did not.
Dean faced a different conversation.
Cole met him at the ranger station.
“You were trying to help.”
Dean nodded.
“And you still should’ve called before descending.”
“I know.”
“You’re fifty-eight, not twenty-eight.”
Dean smiled.
“My knees informed me of that halfway down.”
Cole almost laughed.
Then became serious.
“You hiding the gloves nearly made you our first suspect.”
Dean looked embarrassed.
“I know.”
“Next time, tell me what you did before I have to guess.”
“Deal.”
The old wooden gate was replaced.
The new barrier was taller.
It could not simply be lifted and unlatched by visitors.
A locked metal barrier extended across the old trail entrance.
New warning signs explained why the route was closed:
ACTIVE EROSION — HIDDEN DROP-OFFS — NO PUBLIC ACCESS.
Cole wanted people to understand the hazard rather than seeing only a generic prohibition.
Then Alex visited again.
He stood beside the overlook.
Cole recognized him.
“Back already?”
Alex smiled.
“Wanted to see it when nobody was falling off it.”
Cole nodded toward the new gate.
“That’s the goal.”
Alex looked down toward the slope where he had seen Oliver’s red jacket.
“I really thought…”
He didn’t finish.
Cole understood.
For several frightening minutes, nobody knew whether the child beneath that jacket was alive.
Three whistle blasts were the only reason they knew to keep looking.
