Alex Heard Three Whistle Blasts Below the Mountain Overlook — Then a Ranger Discovered Someone Had Deliberately Opened the Safety Gate

Chapter 5 — The Secret Viewpoint

Mason finally admitted part of the truth.

He had been beyond the gate.

But only briefly.

“There’s a viewpoint down there.”

Cole stared at him.

“There used to be.”

The old maintenance trail once led to a narrow rock shelf called Raven’s Window.

It offered an unobstructed view of the valley.

Then two years of erosion made the slope unstable.

The park closed the trail.

Mason knew.

Everyone who regularly worked in the area knew.

But Raven’s Window produced extraordinary sunrise photographs.

Mason had continued using it.

Quietly.

“For yourself?” Cole asked.

Mason hesitated.

Dean answered:

“He takes clients.”

Mason glared at him.

Cole looked toward Dean.

“You knew?”

Dean admitted hearing rumors.

Photographers had posted pictures online from angles that could only have been taken below the closed gate.

Some hikers assumed the trail had reopened.

It hadn’t.

Mason marketed the location privately as:

THE SECRET RIDGE.

His customers paid for early-morning photography sessions.

He opened the gate.

Took them down.

Then usually closed it afterward.

“Usually?” Sarah asked.

Mason looked away.

That morning, one client became sick halfway down.

Mason hurried back toward the parking area to get water.

He intended to return immediately.

He left the gate open.

“For how long?” Cole asked.

“Maybe ten minutes.”

Oliver spoke from beside his mother.

“Longer.”

Mason looked at him.

Oliver explained.

He first saw Mason open the gate while his family was eating snacks at a nearby bench.

Mason and two adults disappeared through it.

Later, Oliver saw Mason return alone.

The gate remained open.

Oliver walked closer.

Then he noticed something on the trail below.

A small black camera pouch.

He thought someone had dropped it.

“I was going to pick it up and bring it back.”

Sarah closed her eyes.

Oliver crossed the open gate.

Took only several steps.

Then loose soil gave way beneath him.

He slid.

His jacket caught on a bush.

He kept going.

And landed on the narrow shelf below.
