Oliver Was Forced to Serve Dinner While Everyone Else Sat Down — Then His Father Found the Place Card Proving His Seat Had Been Removed on Purpose
Chapter 1 — “His Seat Was Already Assigned”
Young Oliver stood beside the elegant dinner table with tears in his eyes.
The dining room looked beautiful.
Crystal glasses.
White linen.
Silver candleholders.
Fresh flowers running down the center of the long table.
Twelve adults and children were already seated.
Everyone except Oliver.
Victoria stood beside him holding a wicker basket filled with warm bread.
“Serve the guests.”
Oliver looked toward the empty space where he thought his chair had been.
“But Grandma said I was eating here.”
Victoria’s expression hardened.
“Plans changed.”
“There isn’t enough room.”
Oliver swallowed.
“Where do I eat?”
Victoria pointed toward the kitchen.
“Later.”
Then she pushed the bread basket gently toward him.
“Go.”
Oliver quietly obeyed.
He moved from guest to guest.
“Bread?”
Most people looked uncomfortable.
One woman accepted a roll without meeting his eyes.
Another whispered:
“Thank you, sweetheart.”
But nobody asked why a nine-year-old child was serving dinner while the other children sat at the table.
Then the front door opened.
Oliver’s father, James, walked into the room.
He had been delayed by work and arrived twenty minutes after dinner began.
He stopped immediately.
His son was standing beside the table carrying bread.
“Oliver?”
The boy looked up.
Relief appeared instantly on his face.
“Dad.”
James walked toward him.
“Why aren’t you sitting down?”
Oliver looked toward Victoria.
“She gave me this.”
James took the basket.
Then looked toward Victoria.
“What’s going on?”
Victoria answered calmly.
“We had an extra guest.”
“There wasn’t enough room.”
James looked around the table.
Then down.
Something white was lying on the floor beside a chair that had been pushed against the wall.
He picked it up.
A place card.
Printed in gold letters:
OLIVER BENNETT
James looked toward the wall.
The chair beside the card matched every chair at the table.
He slowly turned toward Victoria.
“There wasn’t enough room…”
Then he held up the card.
“Yet his seat was already assigned?”
Victoria went silent.
Oliver watched his father.
James placed the bread basket on the sideboard.
Then pulled Oliver’s chair back toward the table.
“Sit down.”
Oliver hesitated.
“It’s okay?”
James looked directly at him.
“You were invited.”
“You have a place card.”
“You’re sitting.”
Oliver finally sat.
James walked toward the dessert tray.
He picked up a small chocolate cupcake.
Then placed it in front of his son.
“Eat.”
Oliver’s eyes filled again.
This time for a different reason.
Then James noticed another place card on the table.
It had been handwritten only minutes earlier.
PRESTON VALE JR.
James looked toward Victoria.
“Who is Preston Vale Jr.?”
Victoria’s face changed.
And suddenly the missing chair looked much less like an accident.
