Lily Was Blamed for Shattering Grandma Helen’s Favorite Vase — Then the Pet Camera Showed She Never Touched It

Chapter 1 — “Lily Never Touched It”

Little Lily sat sobbing beside the shattered pieces of Grandma Helen’s favorite vase.

Blue-and-white ceramic fragments covered the living-room floor.

A handful of fresh flowers had landed beside the sofa.

Water slowly spread across the rug.

Helen stood several feet away staring at the mess in disbelief.

“Sweetheart… did you break this?”

Lily shook her head desperately.

“No.”

“Were you playing beside the table?”

“Yes.”

“Did you touch the vase?”

“No!”

Her mother, Claire, hurried into the room after hearing the crash and Lily’s crying.

She immediately knelt beside her daughter.

“What happened?”

Helen pointed toward the floor.

“My vase.”

Claire looked at Lily.

“Mommy, I didn’t.”

Claire put one arm around her.

Then looked toward Helen.

“Did you actually see Lily touch it?”

Helen hesitated.

“No.”

“Then why do you think she did?”

“Because I came in and she was standing right there.”

Lily cried harder.

“I was picking up crayons.”

Helen sighed.

“Lily, the vase didn’t just jump off the table.”

Claire looked toward the side table.

Then remembered something.

The family had installed a pet camera facing the living room because their golden retriever, Buddy, had recently developed a habit of stealing cushions whenever everyone left.

“We can check.”

Helen looked toward her.

“Check what?”

Claire pulled out her phone.

“The pet camera.”

She opened the recording.

The footage began several minutes before the crash.

Lily sat quietly on the floor coloring.

The vase stood on the side table behind her.

Lily never reached toward it.

She never touched the table.

She never even stood up.

Then Buddy entered the room.

The dog walked toward the side table.

He sniffed one of the flowers hanging over the edge.

Then turned.

His body bumped the furniture.

The narrow table wobbled.

The vase tipped.

For one second it balanced against the edge.

Then fell.

It crashed onto the floor.

Lily jumped.

Buddy ran away.

Only then did Lily stand and move toward the broken pieces.

Claire paused the video.

She looked toward Helen.

“Lily never touched it.”

Helen’s expression changed completely.

Lily wiped her face.

“I told you.”

Helen looked toward her granddaughter.

“Oh, sweetheart.”

But Claire was still looking at the paused recording.

Something about the table bothered her.

“Mom.”

Helen turned.

Claire pointed toward the screen.

“Why was the vase on that table?”

Helen froze.

Because the vase normally lived on a high shelf across the room.

Far away from Lily.

And far away from Buddy.
