Ava Was Accused of Taking Missing Money — Then the Security Camera Showed She Had Only Picked Up Cash Someone Else Dropped

Chapter 1 — “Then We’ll Check”

Little Ava sat crying at the kitchen table while Aunt Nicole stood across from her holding an open white envelope.

“There was money in here.”

Ava wiped her face.

“I didn’t take it.”

Nicole looked toward the counter.

“You were playing right here.”

“Did you take it?”

Ava shook her head harder.

“No!”

Her mother, Sarah, walked into the kitchen carrying a basket of laundry.

She immediately stopped.

“Why is Ava crying?”

Nicole held up the envelope.

“Some cash is missing.”

Sarah put the laundry down.

“How much?”

“One hundred and sixty dollars.”

Sarah looked toward Ava.

“Sweetheart, did you touch Aunt Nicole’s envelope?”

“No.”

Nicole sighed.

“Sarah, she was sitting three feet away from it.”

“That doesn’t answer whether she touched it.”

“I counted the money this morning.”

“Now it’s short.”

Ava suddenly said:

“I found money.”

Nicole’s expression changed.

“There.”

“You found money?” Sarah asked.

Ava nodded.

“On floor.”

Nicole folded her arms.

“And where is it now?”

Ava pointed toward a small wooden drawer beneath the kitchen phone.

Sarah opened it.

Inside was a folded stack of bills held together with a purple hair tie.

Nicole stared.

“That’s it.”

She reached for the money.

Sarah stopped her.

“Wait.”

Nicole frowned.

“What?”

Sarah looked toward Ava.

“Where exactly did you find this?”

“By robot.”

Ava pointed toward the robot vacuum docked beside the pantry.

Nicole shook her head.

“She probably dropped it there after taking it from the counter.”

Ava immediately began crying again.

“No!”

Sarah looked toward Nicole.

“You’re guessing.”

“I’m using common sense.”

Sarah’s eyes moved toward the ceiling.

A security camera covered the kitchen entrance and most of the counter.

“Then we’ll check.”

She opened the recording on her phone.

At 10:14 that morning, the kitchen was empty.

Then a man walked through carrying a tool case.

Sarah recognized him.

“That’s Owen.”

Owen Reed had been repairing the dishwasher earlier.

He stopped beside the counter.

Reached into his jacket pocket.

Pulled out his phone.

And as he walked away…

several folded bills slipped from the same pocket.

They landed beside the robot vacuum.

Owen never noticed.

Almost twenty minutes later, Ava entered.

She saw the bills.

Looked around.

Then picked them up.

She walked directly toward the little drawer.

Placed the money inside.

Closed it.

Then returned to her crayons.

Sarah paused the recording.

Nicole stared at the screen.

Ava had not gone near Nicole’s envelope.

Not once.

Sarah held up the recovered bills.

“These didn’t come from your envelope.”

Nicole’s face fell.

Sarah looked directly at her.

“You accused her before even asking what happened.”

Ava whispered:

“I was saving it.”

Sarah pulled her close.

“I know.”

Then Sarah counted the bills.

Her expression changed.

“Nicole.”

“What?”

Sarah looked down.

“This isn’t one hundred and sixty dollars.”

It was two hundred and forty.

Nicole stared.

The money Ava found could not possibly be the money Nicole believed was missing.

Which meant there was still another mystery.
