Lucas moved quietly between the chairs, refilling glasses before anyone had to ask.
The private dining room belonged to one of the most elegant hotels in the city.
Crystal glasses.
White tablecloths.
Soft piano music from the lobby beyond the doors.
At the center of the table sat Evelyn Parker.
Eighty-one years old.
Surrounded by children, grandchildren, and relatives who had gathered for her birthday.
Lucas leaned across the table to place a glass beside her.
That was when Evelyn saw his wrist.
She stopped breathing.
A thin antique bracelet circled his arm.
Silver links.
Three tiny blue stones.
And one slightly crooked clasp.
“Young man.”
Lucas turned.
“Yes, ma’am?”
Evelyn pointed toward the bracelet.
“Where did you get that?”
Lucas looked down.
“This?”
“Yes.”
“It belonged to my mother.”
Evelyn’s expression changed completely.
Her daughter Caroline noticed.
“Mom?”
Evelyn ignored her.
She opened her handbag.
Her hands trembled as she searched through it.
Then she removed an old black-and-white photograph protected inside a plastic sleeve.
Everyone at the table went quiet.
Evelyn placed the photograph beside Lucas’s wrist.
It showed two young women standing outside a dance hall.
One was Evelyn.
The other wore the exact same bracelet.
Lucas stared at it.
“That’s impossible.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“What was your mother’s name?”
“Anna Cole.”
Evelyn suddenly pushed back her chair.
“Anna?”
Lucas nodded.
“Anna Marie Cole.”
Evelyn nearly lost her balance.
Caroline caught her arm.
“Mom, sit down.”
But Evelyn kept staring at Lucas.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“How old is your mother?”
Lucas’s expression darkened.
“She died three years ago.”
Evelyn covered her mouth.

“Anna wasn’t supposed to be her name.”
Lucas frowned.
“What does that mean?”
