Chapter 11 — “Your Essay Was Better Than Mine”
Olivia sat across from Sophie.
For several seconds, neither girl spoke.
Then Olivia held up Sophie’s essay.
“Ms. Patel let me read it after you said it was okay.”
Sophie nodded.
Olivia continued.
“It’s really good.”
Sophie looked uncertain.
Olivia smiled weakly.
“I was disappointed when I didn’t get picked.”
“But I didn’t want you to lose it.”
“And I didn’t know Ms. Vanessa was doing anything.”
Sophie looked toward her.
“I know.”
Olivia’s eyes filled.
“Everyone is saying she did it because of me.”
Sophie thought carefully.
Then said:
“She did it because she decided to.”
Rachel, sitting nearby, looked toward her daughter.
That was exactly right.
Olivia had not asked Vanessa to interfere.
Being the student Vanessa preferred did not make Olivia responsible for Vanessa’s behavior.
Olivia looked relieved.
Then she said:
“You should still read.”
Sophie looked down.
“I’m scared people will think the note was true.”
Olivia shook her head.
“I don’t.”
Then:
“And I came second.”
“If I thought your essay didn’t deserve it, I’d probably know.”
Sophie laughed for the first time that day.
Olivia smiled.
“Your ending was better than mine.”
“My mom liked yours.”
“Traitor.”
Both girls laughed.
That conversation did something no adult explanation had managed.
It separated Sophie from the humiliation Vanessa tried to create.
The person Vanessa supposedly wanted to benefit did not want the benefit.
Olivia wanted Sophie’s achievement recognized accurately.
Before leaving, Olivia asked:
“Are you going to read?”
Sophie looked at her essay.
“Maybe.”
Then Harris received confirmation from the district office.
The investigation into Vanessa’s conduct had reached an immediate decision about whether she could remain in Sophie’s classroom activities.
