Vanessa sat down.
For several seconds, she stared at the floor.
Then she finally spoke.
“I thought another student deserved the reading.”
Harris looked at her.
“Which student?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“Olivia Grant.”
Olivia was another finalist.
A talented student who had written an essay about caring for her younger brother.
“Why Olivia?”
Vanessa sighed.
She had helped Olivia revise several earlier assignments during an after-school writing group.
She knew how hard Olivia had worked.
When Sophie was selected instead, Vanessa felt the committee had made the wrong decision.
Harris stared at her.
“The essays were blind-scored.”
“I know.”
“You weren’t on the final judging panel.”
“I know.”
“Then you had no authority to change the result.”
“I wasn’t trying to change it.”
Harris pointed toward the reconstructed note.
“It literally tells Sophie to withdraw.”
Vanessa went silent.
Harris waited.

“I thought if she stepped aside voluntarily, Olivia might get the spot.”
Harris stared.

Not a mysterious note discovered in Vanessa’s mailbox.
She wanted Sophie to believe the school doubted her.
She wanted Sophie to withdraw.
Then Olivia, the runner-up, would likely be invited to read.
“Did Olivia know?”
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“No.”
Harris’s voice sharpened.

“Good.”
Harris wrote that down too.

“Why the cruel wording?”
