Olivia had heard students talking about what happened in the hallway.
Someone said Sophie had received a terrible note connected to Community Night.
Someone else said Vanessa was involved.
By lunchtime, rumors had begun spreading.
Olivia became worried because Vanessa had supported her writing throughout the year.
She told her mother.
Her mother contacted Harris immediately.
Olivia is terrified people will think she had something to do with this. Please tell us what is happening.
Harris looked toward Rachel.
“We have to protect both students.”
Rachel nodded.
Sophie asked:
“Olivia?”
Harris chose his words carefully.
“Vanessa believed Olivia should have been selected.”
Sophie’s expression changed.
“Did Olivia write the note?”
“No.”
Harris answered immediately.
“There is no evidence Olivia knew anything about it.”
“Everything we have shows this was Vanessa’s decision.”
Sophie nodded.
That distinction mattered.
Harris did not want one false accusation creating another.
That afternoon he met privately with Olivia and her mother.
He told them only what they needed to know.
Olivia had done nothing wrong.
Her essay remained highly rated.
She was not responsible for anything Vanessa did in her name.
Olivia began crying anyway.
“Sophie’s going to think I wanted this.”
“She doesn’t,” Harris said.
“How do you know?”
“Because she asked whether you wrote the note.”
“And when I told her no, she believed the evidence.”
Olivia looked down.
Then asked:
“Can I talk to her?”
Harris shook his head gently.
“Not unless Sophie wants that.”
Olivia nodded.
Later, Harris asked Sophie privately.
“Olivia would like to say something to you.”
Sophie thought.
Then agreed.
When Olivia walked into the counselor’s room, she was holding something in her hand.
It was not another envelope.
It was a copy of Sophie’s essay.
