Chapter 6 — The Parking Lot Recording
Vanessa’s SUV had a dash camera.
It recorded automatically whenever the vehicle was running.
Ryan retrieved the memory card.
They searched Saturday afternoon.
At 2:17 PM, Vanessa’s car entered the supermarket parking lot.
The camera faced directly toward the entrance.
Ten minutes later, Mark Dalton appeared.
Emma had remembered correctly.
A woman stood beside him.
She handed him cash.
Dalton counted it.
Then handed her multiple cards.
Ryan paused the video.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“Oh my God.”
The recording wasn’t perfect.
But the exchange was clear.
Then another detail appeared.
The woman turned toward the camera.
Vanessa recognized her.
“That’s Denise Walker.”
Denise owned a small resale shop less than a mile from the school.
She also advertised discounted grocery cards online.
Ryan stared at Vanessa.
“Call Linda.”
Vanessa did.
No answer.
She tried again.
Still nothing.
Then Emma said something that made both parents stop.
“She wasn’t at school today.”
Vanessa lowered the phone.
“What?”
“Mrs. Coleman.”
“Did someone say why?”
Emma nodded.
“Mr. Dalton said she quit.”
Vanessa stared at Ryan.
Linda had never mentioned quitting.
And less than twenty-four hours earlier, she had texted Vanessa:
I THINK I FINALLY HAVE ENOUGH.
Ryan picked up his phone.
“We’re calling the police.”
